The Adenau Way of the Cross - Cultural monument and place of contemplation (also as a circular route from/to historic market square Adenau)

The Way of the Cross was built by citizens of the Catholic parish of Adenau between 1861 and 1863 in the neo-Gothic style.

Two angels with the instruments of Christ's Passion mark the beginning of the path. "Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane" and a "Burial Grotto" with seven figures frame the actual Way of the Cross.

The individual stations are made of Rieden tuff stone, the (outer) frames, and the steps of the path guidance were made from basalt columns. The terracotta reliefs are based on the 14 frescoes by the painter Josef von Führich in the parish church of St. Nepomuk in Vienna.

The flora and fauna of the park-like grounds also offer nature lovers a rewarding destination, as many non-native trees and shrubs were planted when it was created.

The historic Way of the Cross is also signposted as a circular route from the historic market square and the route then has a total length of about 1.8 km.

From the market square in Adenau, you go through Kollengasse, past the former hospital.

After about 500 m, you reach the entrance to the Way of the Cross, which is impossible to overlook due to the two angels on the left and right. 14 stations line the path, which is framed at the beginning by the Mount of Olives grotto and at the end by the burial grotto.

At the end of the Way of the Cross, you meet a farm road that leads downhill over Kirchberg back to the town to Dr.-Creutz-Platz.

The length of the route including the access path is about 1800 m, the elevation difference about 75 m, the duration about 1 hour.

The access path to the historic Way of the Cross is continuously signposted from the market square.
