Cycling in the Ahr Valley

Along the river, through woods or vineyards

Cycling is one of the most popular leisure activities in the Ahr Valley. Discovering the magnificent vineyards, meadows and floodplain landscapes from the saddle is simply great fun and offers a first-hand experience of nature.

For leisure cyclists, it was a paradise – the Ahr Cycle Route. It winds its way for just under 80 kilometres right through the varied landscape of the Ahr Valley, almost always following the river. At present, the Ahr Cycle Route is not yet fully open to cyclists due to flood damage, or sections are being diverted. On the stretch from Remagen to Ahrbrück, the Ahr Valley Railway can be used as a temporary alternative. Reconstruction of the damaged sections is underway, but it will take some time before the new Ahr Cycle Path is fully restored.

The Ahr Valley also offers further opportunities for active cycling: those travelling by e-bike can climb the vineyards or explore the vast meadow plateaus of the Ahr Heights.

An alternative to the Ahr Cycle Route is offered by the discovery tours ‘In the Footsteps of the Railway’,‘In the Footsteps of the Ahr and the Eifel’ and‘In the Footsteps of the Kalkeifel’. Here you can experience the varied landscape of the Upper Ahr Valley and the Eifel.

In the lower Ahr Valley, the circular route is also well worth a go: starting from Bad Neuenahr or Sinzig, it takes you past the mouth of the Ahr and then along the Rhine Cycle Route to Bad Hönningen and back. Another leisurely cycle tour takes you along the Ahr and the Rhine as far as Bonn.
