Entdecker-Tour Blankenheim: Auf den Spuren von Ahr und Eifel
The circular tour leads through the Upper Ahr Valley and over Eifel heights with unique views. Follow the course of the River Ahr and discover wide (Eifel) fields and forests.
This circular tour starts at the source of the River Ahr in Blankenheim. In the middle of the historic town centre, the Ahr has its source in the vaulted cellar of a half-timbered house. The route then leads through the Upper Ahr Valley. Here, where the Ahr slowly picks up speed and grows steadily, it is wonderful to cycle along the Ahr cycle path and the disused railway line.
After Ahrhütte, you change to the Eifel-Höhen-Route. As the name suggests, you now explore the varied landscape of the Eifel with its hills and far-reaching views.
The route continues to the Freilinger See lake. The outdoor area can be used for a short break or to cool off in the lake.
The tranquil village of Mülheim, which is characterised by its numerous half-timbered houses, is also on this route.
Highlights along the way:
- Historic town centre & Eifelmuseum Blankenheim
- Schlossweiher Blankenheim
- Schmetterlingsgarten "Eifalia" in Ahrhütte
- Römervilla "Villa rustica" Blankenheim

To the tour planner
This cycle tour starts at the source of the Ahr in Blankenheim. The Ahr rises in the cellar of a half-timbered house in the middle of the historic town centre. We follow the course of the river for around 11 kilometres along the Ahr cycle path from Blankenheim to Ahrhütte. The cycle path is fully signposted. We cycle comfortably along the disused railway line, which is characterised by tunnels, bridges and a viaduct.
After Ahrhütte, immediately after the "Lommersdorfer Mühle", we turn left through a subway and change to the Eifel-Höhen-Route towards Lommersdorf. This cycle path, which is also fully signposted with its own markings, takes us up to a hill that promises magnificent views of the Eifel landscape.
Further along the Eifel Heights Route, we cycle via Lommersdorf to Lake Freilingen. The lake is a good place to cool off or take a break.
The route then takes us across meadows and through forests to the charming village of Mülheim, which impresses with its half-timbered houses, before we return to Blankenheim via the Eifel-Höhen-Route.
Please note: In Blankenheim, follow the signs towards Ahrquelle/town centre. From here, the Eifel-Höhe route continues in the direction of Blankenheimerdorf and therefore not to the destination of our discovery tour.
