RheinBurgenWeg 02. Stage Remagen - Bad Breisig (North-South)

Not far from the Remagen station, the 2nd stage of the Rheinburgenweg (RBW) starts, which crosses the Ahr valley in Sinzig and then leads through cozy forest to Bad Breisig. Along the way, not only the high plateaus of Ahrplatte and Mönchsheide are inspiring, but also cultural highlights such as the castle and basilica in Sinzig, or the relics of the Celts on the Hahn.

At the underpass of the B9 in Remagen, you encounter the logos of the RBW. From Bergstraße, turn into Viktoriabergweg and feel: this ascent gets tough! The RBW climbs in zigzags through the residential area upwards, with occasional magnificent views into the Rhine valley providing a welcome opportunity to catch your breath. After entering the forest, where you leave the relics of the Waldburg to the left, it becomes flatter. After several changes of direction, you reach the hiking parking lot Waldburgstraße at the edge of the forest. Together with the Apollinarisschleife, the RBW now leads over the high plateau. Upon reaching the forest, a short detour to the nearby Jewish cemetery is recommended before following the RBW half-left to an idyllic forest meadow. Then the forest takes over again.

The Apollinarisschleife turns right, then the RBW descends into the Ahr valley. After a significant loss of altitude, you reach the outskirts of Bad Bodendorf. But immediately the street Peterstal leads the hiker left back into the green. Above the houses and gardens, it goes through the hillside, where beautiful views open up into the Ahr valley. Finally, the RBW bends sharply right onto a staircase path, which leads past orchards down to Bad Bodendorf. There a detour begins, because after the Ahr flood, the original route of the RBW is interrupted indefinitely.

Detour:

At the intersection Hauptstraße / Schulstraße, walk straight ahead until it goes left into Ahrweg towards the station. You cross the railway and federal road and follow Bäderstraße to the Ahr, which you cross via a bridge. Together with the Ahrsteig access path, you enter the forest. Step by step you gain altitude, master some intersections, and finally meet the Ahrsteig at a forest playground. With this, you stroll leisurely downhill and soon reach the first houses of Sinzig. Shortly before the roundabout with Barbarossastraße, you meet the old track of the RBW.

Along Barbarossastraße you reach a small park and the castle of Sinzig. A few meters further, Emperor Barbarossa greets you with a stone gaze from the monument pedestal. Then you may cross the street and walk through the park below the impressive basilica. At Rheinstraße, wall remains testify to the long history of the former imperial palace Sinzig.

The following ascent leads through a hollow path and across meadows uphill to the forest edge. On top of the plateau, quiet forest hiking is on the agenda until the Mönchsheide provides variety and the nearby manor invites you to stop.

The RBW again dips into the forest, passes some stations of the fairy tale path and leads to the forest clearing at the Trotzenberg, where the yoga path joins. Shortly afterwards, the Hahn shelter offers a great view into the Frankenbach valley before you walk towards the hillside edge. There you encounter Celtic traces and from a swing bench you have a view across the Rhine of Arenfels castle. The steep descent to Bad Breisig is quickly mastered and after a short passage through the town, you reach the Roman baths. This beautiful stage ends at the nearby Brunnenstraße.
