The oldest castle complex in the Ahr Valley towers high above Mayschoß: the ruins of Saffenburg Castle

The hike around Saffenburg Castle shows the Ahr valley from its most beautiful side. The views from the ascent to the castle and from the red wine hiking trail over the valley are spectacular.

From the station in Mayschoß, the path leads uphill via the Ahr Valley Trail A1 into the vineyards to the saddle of the Saffenburg. With the castle in view, the ascent offers magnificent views of the river valley, the surrounding towns, and the steep vineyard terraces.

Arriving at the first height, the Ahr Valley Trail is initially left to the left for the detour to the ruin of the Saffenburg. A first surprisingly new view of the valley on the Middle Ahr is offered from the plateau around the shelter hut. Broad stone steps lead to the highest point of the castle complex. From here, a sensational 360° panoramic view is offered. After a rest at one of the most beautiful viewing points in the Ahr Valley, the path continues along the Ahr Valley Trail A1 towards Rech.

Over a short shady forest path, the hike goes downhill into Rech. Arriving in the rustic town center with half-timbered houses and winding alleys, vintner’s farms and seasonal wine taverns invite you to linger. The path leads through the wine village past the church, which is dedicated to St. Lucia. After crossing the Ahr and the Ahr Red Wine Road, the path leads up into the vineyards to the Red Wine Hiking Trail.

The Red Wine Hiking Trail is considered one of the most beautiful themed hiking trails in Germany. Along one of the most beautiful stages from Rech to Mayschoß, new surprising views open up behind every bend in the path. The ruin of the Saffenburg is always in sight. At special viewpoints as well as at the "Korbachrast" shelter hut directly on the Red Wine Hiking Trail, there is the opportunity to take a break with this special backdrop. Upon arrival in Mayschoß, the Michaelishof wine house right on the path invites you to stop for a meal. In front of the Michaelishof, the Red Wine Hiking Trail goes briefly uphill and then leads left into the Möchberg vineyard location.

The view from Mönchberg of the Faltengebirge around Mayschoß is another highlight of the route. After the circuit around Mönchberg, the Red Wine Hiking Trail is left towards Mayschoß. A signpost leads to the vintners’ cooperative in Mayschoß. The world's oldest vintners’ cooperative is awarded as a "Highlight of Wine Culture" and as the "Best Vintners' Cooperative in Germany". The winemakers of the cooperative invite you to end an eventful day in the Ahr Valley on the sun terrace or in the historic barrel cellar. Opposite the cooperative, across the Ahr bridge, after 8.6 km of walking distance, the starting point of the walk is reached at the station in Mayschoß.

From the train station in Mayschoß, the trail leads along the Ahrtalweg A1 uphill into the vineyards to the saddle of the Saffenburg.

With the castle in view, the ascent offers magnificent views of the river valley, the surrounding villages and the steep vineyard terraces.

Arrived on the first hill, the Ahrtalweg is first left for the detour to the ruins of the Saffenburg.

A first surprisingly new view of the valley on the Middle Ahr is offered from the plateau around the refuge.

The highest point of the castle complex is reached via wide stone steps.

From here a sensational 360 ° panoramic view is offered.

After a rest on one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Ahr valley, the trail continues along the Ahrtalweg A1 in the direction of Rech.

Via a short shady forest path, the hike leads downhill to Rech. Arrived in the quaint village center of well-kept half-timbered houses and winding alleys, wineries and wine taverns invite you to linger.

The path leads through the wine village past the church dedicated to St. Lucia.

On the oldest stone bridge over the Ahr (1764), the hiker encounters the landmark of Rech, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk.

After crossing the Ahrrotweinstraße, the trail leads up into the vineyards to the Rotweinwanderweg.

The Rotweinwanderweg is considered one of the most beautiful themed hiking trails in Germany.

Over one of the most beautiful stages from Rech to Mayschoß, new surprising views are offered behind every bend in the path.

The ruins of the Saffenburg are always in view.

At special vantage points as well as at the refuge "Korbachrast" you have the opportunity to take a break in front of this special scenery directly on the Red Wine Trail.

Upon arrival in Mayschoß, the Michaelishof wine tavern directly on the trail invites you to stop for a bite to eat.

In front of the Michaelishof, the red wine hiking trail leads briefly uphill and then turns left into the Möchberg vineyard.

The view from the Mönchberg to the folded mountains around Mayschoß is another highlight of the tour.

After the loop around the Mönchberg, the red wine hiking trail is left in the direction of Mayschoß. A signpost leads to the Winzergenssenschaft (winegrowers' cooperative) in Mayschoß.

The world's oldest winegrowers' cooperative has been awarded the title "Highlight of Wine Culture" and "Best Winegrowers' Cooperative in Germany".

The cooperative's winegrowers invite you to end an eventful day in the Ahr Valley on the sun terrace or in the historic barrel cellar.

Opposite the cooperative, over the Ahr bridge, the starting point of the hike is reached after 8.6 km of trail with the train station in Mayschoß.
