Bilderweg Kurt Gratzel | City tour Adenau

A very special artist, person and painter of the Eifel is Kurt Gratzel, trained painter, art painter, graphic artist and etcher.

Kurt Gratzel, born in 1921 in Danzig, first completed art training with Prof. Fritz Pfuhle in Danzig. After the war and captivity, he was drawn to Adenau, where he completed an apprenticeship as a painter from 1951.

From 1959 to 1963 he spent further study years in Paris and in the French provinces, focusing mainly on watercolor and nude painting.

In 1963 he returned to Adenau, where he painted with love of detail old distinctive buildings of the Johanniterstadt. His views of Adenau are now skilfully staged along this picture route through the city.

His artistic work includes hundreds of works in oil, watercolor and lithography techniques. Armed with easel and brush, his preferred motifs were the wild romantic landscapes of the High Eifel, whose moods and light he was able to capture in all seasons.

We start at the Marienkapelle in Adenau, on the meadow of which the first work | Marienkapelle is located, and cross the street at the Johanniterapotheke. Here we keep right and head towards Volksbank. On the opposite house wall, the picture |Pickelsgasse is installed. Continuing along the main street, we cross the street again at Rossmann and turn right at the end into Wimbachstraße up to the fork Bertrodtstraße. Here we encounter the third work | Self-portrait. We go back a short distance on Wimbachstraße and turn right into the alley In der Holl, which we follow up to the main street. Here we cross the street again and turn left behind the pedestrian crossing, cross Dr.-Creutz-Platz-Straße and reach the | Zunftbrunnen with the eponymous work below the parking lot. Passing the parking lot on the left, we head towards the Protestant church up to the corner of Kirchstraße. Here, opposite, we find the works | Parish church/Parish office as well as a depiction of the | Protestant Church. We follow Kirchstraße to the left up to the Catholic parish church St. Johannes der Täufer with the work | Parish church. At the end of Kirchstraße, we again follow the signs to the left towards the Historic Market Square, where we turn right. At the Market Fountain, we orient ourselves again to the right and follow Kollengasse up to the | Corner Steinweg. We follow Steinweg past the hospital to the cemetery. Here we keep right again and walk past the cemetery now on the left side and reach after about 500m the square with the memorial stone of Kurt Gratzel as well as the work | Leimbachsbrück. We turn back towards the cemetery and turn right behind the cemetery. There is a sharp left curve, after a short straight section on Mühlenstraße we take the next possibility right up to the street Am Alten Wehr. Here we keep left and reach via Mühlenstraße the Bahnhofstraße. Now we turn left into Bahnhofstraße, cross the street and head towards the roundabout. Here we cross Blankenheimer Straße using the zebra crossing and follow the right side of the main street again back to our starting point, the Marienkapelle.
