Altenahr Family Trail - Play, fun, and fascinating views

On the hike along the family route, the spectacular views over 3 districts at the same time are a real highlight. At about 3.5 km, 100 meters in altitude and an estimated duration of one hour, the path appears relaxed yet very varied.

Bei der Wanderung entlang des Familienwegs sind die spektakulären Blicke auf 3 Ortsteile gleichzeitig ein echtes Highlight. Mit ca.  3,5 km, 100 Höhenmetern und einer geschätzten Dauer von einer Stunde zeigt sich der Weg entspannt und doch sehr abwechslungsreich.

Zu beachten: der Weg ist nicht kinderwagentauglich.

The family hiking trail in Altenahr – an adventure for everyone

The family hiking trail is well suited for families with children. There are three playgrounds in the immediate vicinity.

Church Altenahr

Route description:

The route starts at the Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Annunciation in front of the Peace Oak, Pützgasse 2 in Altenahr. Initially, it goes steeply uphill for 200 m along Pützgasse – past the church and the kindergarten – up the mountain. At a beautiful fountain with a rest bench, the path follows 50 m to the right until it becomes a gravel path leading into the vineyards. From here, the vineyard path winds gently uphill. The Are Castle is always in view. It is a listed ruin of a hill castle located 240 m above the municipality of Altenahr. It was built by Count Dietrich I of Are from 1095 to 1105. From 1997 to 1999, the ruin was secured and placed under monument protection. After the vineyards give way to a forest, a large meadow area is reached. Here the path turns sharply to the right and after about 100 m the playground at the Martinshütte is reached. Families can pause here to recover after the first ascent.

Continuing straight ahead is a beautiful rest area with one of the most beautiful views of Are Castle, the town of Altenahr, and the surrounding mountains. Following the path further, you again pass the Martinshütte (other side) and reach a new development area of Altenahr. A short detour of 50 m invites you to another playground. However, the signposted path turns left and goes up the mountain again. Here the federal road B 257 is crossed via a yellow bridge. At the end of the meadows, the path turns left again. It goes slightly uphill through an enchanting forest area where sun rays shine through the dense leaf canopy. Time and again there are views into the Ahr valley. At a junction, turn left to go steeply downhill. This section should only be taken after enjoying the view at the small rest bench. High above Altenahr, there is a view over the Ahr river to the district of Altenburg.

From the junction, it goes steeply downhill for 500 m, past closely spaced trees and hedges covered with lichens and mosses. The path ends between houses at Pützgasse. From here, continue down the street to the left to Weinbergstraße. Turning right here, another playground can be reached in 200 m. However, the signposted path leads over a short staircase to the fountain that was already passed on the ascent. Now it goes steeply downhill again to the church of Altenahr.

Way description:

The tour starts at the Roman Catholic parish church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in front of the Friedenseiche, Pützgasse 2 in Altenahr. The route first climbs 200 metres steeply up Pützgasse past the church and kindergarten. At a beautiful fountain with a bench for resting, the path follows to the right for 50 metres until it turns into a gravelled path that leads into the vineyards. From here, the vineyard path winds gently up the hill. Are Castle is always in view. This is a listed ruin of a hilltop castle located 240 metres above the municipality of Altenahr. It was built between 1095 and 1105 by Count Dietrich I von Are. From 1997 to 1999, the ruins were secured and placed under a preservation order. After the vineyards give way to a forest, a large meadow area is reached. Here the path turns sharply to the right and after approx. 100 metres you reach the Martinshütte playground. Families can stop here to relax after the first climb.

Further straight ahead is a lovely rest area with one of the most beautiful views of Are Castle, the village of Altenahr and the surrounding mountains. Continuing along the path, you pass the Martinshütte again (on the other side) and reach a new housing estate in Altenahr. After a short detour of 50 metres, another playground invites you to linger. However, the signposted path turns off to the left and the route climbs up the hill again. Here you cross the B 257 main road over a yellow bridge. At the end of the meadows, the path turns left again. The path leads gently uphill through a magical forest, where the sun's rays shine through the dense canopy. Views of the Ahr valley open up again and again. When you reach a crossroads, the trail descends steeply to the left. However, this section should only be tackled after enjoying the view from the small rest bench. High above Altenahr, the view extends across the Ahr to the district of Altenburg.

From the crossroads, the path descends steeply down the hill for 500 metres, past dense trees and hedges covered in lichen and moss. The path ends between the houses on Pützgasse. From here, turn left down the road to Weinbergstraße. Turning right here, you can reach another playground 200 metres away. However, the signposted path leads up a short flight of steps to the fountain that you passed on the way up. The route now descends steeply again to the church in Altenahr.
