Wine discovery tour Mittelahr

The Mittelahr Wine Discovery Tour is the counterpart to the Ahrweiler Wine Discovery Tour. From mid-2026, a "listening tour" will be added to the new tour near Ahrweiler, which comprises 28 themed panels. The Mittelahr wine discovery tour can generally be started in Marienthal, a district of Dernau, or in Mayschoß. You can easily join or leave the tour along the route in the wine villages of Dernau, Rech and Mayschoß.

The tour starts at the large overview board of the "Mittelahr Wine Discovery Tour" above Marienthal Monastery on the red wine hiking trail. From here, the trail leads slightly uphill through the vineyards to the first vantage point at the Heinrich-Nietgen-Ruh. From there, there is a wonderful view of the wine village of Dernau and the Krausberg with the Krausberg tower.

We stay on the red wine hiking trail and follow it above the village through the various vineyards around Dernau. We pass the "Dorfbalkon" rest area, which invites us to take a short break. At the next fork in the path, take the lower left-hand path. This later brushes lightly against the edge of the village. Here we keep left and walk downhill for a while before passing through an underpass under the K35, which climbs slightly. We then pass the Dr. Karl Näkel hut and return to the vineyards and the red wine hiking trail.

This is followed by a short, wooded section along a narrow mountain path past the "Mosesquelle" spring. Please note: this section is not suitable for baby carriages.

From here, there is a beautiful view of the small wine village of Rech with its half-timbered houses and vineyards. We continue along the path, pass the "Eremitage" and walk slightly downhill. At the second fork in the path at the wine vending machine, we take the right-hand, ascending path and follow the red wine hiking trail (RWW) towards Mayschoß. In this section, the trail leads past impressive slate cliffs and through the steep vineyards that characterize the landscape of the region. In places, the trail follows narrow paths and stone steps to the Korbachhütte.

From there, the trail continues along gravel paths to the first "village door", which welcomes hikers to the wine village of Mayschoß and offers an impressive view of the ruins of Saffenburg Castle opposite. We stay on the red wine hiking trail and follow it downhill to the left at the next fork until we reach the crossroads at Michaelishof.

We keep right here and walk back up the hill. After about 100 meters, we turn left and pass the back of the farm. The path then continues through the Mönchberg vineyards to the last signpost on the wine discovery tour.
