Short route 2 (14 km) | Fürstin-Margaretha-Weg (Wershofen-Eichenbach-Wershofen)

Right at the beginning of this enchanting short route, the hiker is offered the hilly Hocheifel landscape at the Hocheifel viewpoint Kottenborner Kreuz near Wershofen and has a free view of the distinctive Aremberg, which stands impressively as a tertiary volcano and highest mountain of the Ahr Mountains.
Comfortable hiking loungers along the path invite you to relax and simply immerse yourself in the idyllic landscape. The route continues relaxedly through picturesque mixed forests, which owe their existence to the sustainable promotion of agriculture and forestry in the Duchy of Arenberg. Fürstin Margaretha, who ruled here in the 16th century, was a very farsighted and intelligent woman in her time. She also promoted mining and ore smelting, cared deeply for the welfare of her subjects, and advocated for the school education of all children in the duchy.

Highlights on the way:

We start in Wershofen at the intersection of Dreisbachstraße/Südstraße above the St. Pitte rest area and follow Südstraße to the main road at Hotel Kastenholz, where a large game enclosure can be visited. Here the path crosses the L74 via Kottenbornerstraße to Kottenborner Chapel. From there we have a fantastic view of the distinctive Aremberg. A seating area invites you to picnic. Past the chapel, the hiking trail leads downhill through meadows and forest towards Laufenbacher Hof. At the bottom, the route crosses the L73 and the Dreisbach stream shortly before the tunnel. From here we go uphill to the right; to the left, you can see the village of Fuchshofen. The path continues to the meadows of Eichenbach. To the right, you can see Wershofen and Ohlenhard; after a few hundred meters, we reach a nice open hiking hut. There are information panels there showing the native animals of the region. After about 400 meters, we reach the 14-Nothelfer Chapel and can already look towards Eichenbach.
At the fork, we take the short route towards Wershofen to reach the starting point again after about 3 km.
