Grape Path No. 5 - Once around Ehlingen
The lower Ahr valley between Bad Neuenahr and Sinzig is wide, and the character of the landscape has a very special, unique touch. Grape Path No. 5 “Once around Ehlingen” invites you to a relaxed, short round through vineyards and field paths with magnificent views. The start is in Ehlingen. From here, signs with dark red grapes point the way up to the vineyard site Ehlinger Kapellenberg. On the left, a highlight awaits: at Ehlinger Ley you can gaze far into the Ahr valley. On the opposite Landskrone once stood a castle complex from the 13th century. Today, only the castle plateau and the “Maria-Hilf Chapel” can be seen. A seating area invites you to enjoy the panoramic view here.
The Grape Path leads uphill to the vintner’s cabin, which is open from spring to autumn. The path continues to the Balthasar-Schmickler shelter and then along the Grape Path to the right back towards Ehlingen.
Relaxed hiking with plenty of Tuscan views: Once around Ehlingen
The start is in the small village of Ehlingen, a district of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. From here, signs with dark red grapes lead the way up to the vineyard site Ehlinger Kapellenberg. On the left, a highlight awaits hikers: at Ehlinger Ley, also called Ehlinger Köpfchen, you can gaze far into the Ahr valley and to the Landskrone directly opposite. Once, a stately castle complex from the 13th century crowned the hilltop. Today, from Ehlingen, only the castle plateau on the summit and the centuries-old “Maria-Hilf Chapel” on the hillside can be seen. A seating area invites you to enjoy the panoramic view here.
The Grape Path now leads in a gentle ascent uphill to the so-called vintner’s cabin, which is open from spring to autumn. Afterwards, a short walk in the forest provides variety. Upon reaching the small Balthasar-Schmickler shelter, hikers do not follow the AhrSteig towards Sinziger Mühlenberg but turn right along the Grape Path back toward Ehlingen.
In total, five Grape Paths lead on comfortable circular routes through the vineyards of Ehlingen, Heppingen, Bad Neuenahr, Ahrweiler, and Walporzheim. The circular hiking routes are between four and eight kilometers long and are thus also ideal for families with children. All five routes offer wonderful views into the Ahr valley.
The detailed route description with information on dining options, beautiful views, and elevation profiles can be found in the hiking book: "Around Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The 15 most beautiful hiking routes" from J.P. Bachem Verlag (ISBN 978-3-7616-2844-7).
