Ahr cycle path from Blankenheim to Sinzig (entire route)

For leisure cyclists, it was a paradise – the Ahr cycle path. Before the flood, the nearly 80-kilometer-long path wound its way right through the varied landscape of the Ahr valley along the river. However, large parts of the popular Ahr cycle path were destroyed by the flood in July 2021. Reconstruction is underway, but restoring a new Ahr cycle path will still take some time.

Section from Blankenheim to Ahrbrück – Continuously rideable 

From Blankenheim to Fuchshofen, the Ahr cycle path is rideable again. In Antweiler, it temporarily runs through the town until a destroyed section is restored.

Between Fuchshofen and Schuld, the cycle traffic is routed on the state road.  Along the L73, planning started before the flood for a cycle path away from the road is continuing. In Schuld, it temporarily runs through the town until a destroyed bridge is restored.

The section from Schuld to Ahrbrück is again continuously rideable. 

Section from Ahrbrück to Walporzheim – Under reconstruction

Between Ahrbrück and Pützfeld, the cycle path is expected to be closed for an extended period from January 2025. The existing cycle bus line 844 (Altenahr-Rheinbach) has been extended to Ahrbrück, providing an alternative for this section. This bus line is equipped with a bicycle trailer, allowing a limited number of bicycles to be transported. The cycle bus 844 operates from April to November. 

The section between Pützfeld and Kreuzberg is basically passable. 

The cycle path between Kreuzberg and Altenburg is closed due to construction work. 

No safe route through the Ahr valley can currently be recommended for the section between Altenahr and Walporzheim. This heavily damaged section will not be suitable for cyclists for the next few years due to intensive construction work in the valley. Detouring to federal road 267 is not recommended because of the high traffic load. It is not possible to transport bicycles on the rail replacement services in the valley.

Since August 1, 2024, a RadWanderbus (899) runs between Blankenheim and Ahrweiler. In the future, it will operate along the Ahr valley cycle path from April to October.

The LBM project office is working intensively with Deutsche Bahn on rebuilding the cycle path in the valley. Railway and cycle path infrastructure will be rebuilt together.  

Section from Walporzheim to Sinzig – Continuously rideable

The section between Walporzheim and Sinzig can be used with detours. It partly runs on provisional and alternate routes. Please follow the signage for the Ahr cycle path detour.

Please note that riding on the Ahr cycle path requires caution and care, as there may be short-term closures, detours, or structural adaptations.

From the source right in the old town center of Blankenheim, the cycle path mainly follows a former railway line through the Ahr valley. Several short, noticeable climbs and descents to or from the railway embankment must be managed.

In the sometimes narrower, sometimes wider Ahr valley, the cycle path often continues to use the former railway line through a quiet, wooded landscape, crossing the towns of Müsch, Fuchshofen, Schuld, and Ahrbrück. Between Fuchshofen and Schuld, the road must be used. Please ride cautiously here.

Then it goes through the rocky region of the Ahr. Thanks to some bridges and a former railway tunnel, the route goes comfortably and almost without climbs past rock overhangs and right through vineyards. 

From Ahrweiler, the cycle path often runs very close to the Ahr river, initially through Bad Neuenahr with its spa facilities, then in the widened Ahr valley and near the river's delta into the Rhine valley.

In Ahrdorf, you can switch to the Kalkeifel cycle path and ride via Kerpen and Hillesheim to the Kyll cycle path.

In Dümpelfeld, the Ahr cycle path meets the Eifel Volcano Cycle Route, which connects the Rhine and the Moselle with the Ahr cycle path.
