The Apollinaris Fountain

The Apollinaris Fountain in the Heppingen district was discovered by Georg Kreuzberg in the middle of the 19th century. During this time, he acquired a vineyard in the neighbourhood of Bad Neuenahr. However, contrary to his expectations, the wine on this hill did not grow as he had hoped. In order to find out the reason for the poor growth of his vines, Kreuzberg carried out test drillings in 1852. To his surprise, he discovered carbonated water at a depth of 15 metres. The high concentration of CO2 in the soil proved to be the reason why the vines failed to thrive.

In recognition of the historic location on the pilgrimage route to the Apollinarisberg in Remagen, Georg Kreuzberg named the newly discovered spring after Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna - the patron saint of wine. The vineyard was not only located on the pilgrims' path, but also at the foot of the hill. There was a pilgrims' resting place with a holy house that housed a statue of Apollinaris. This is how the use of the Apollinaris spring began.

After multiple sales of the spring, the mineral-rich water is now marketed as Apollinaris mineral water under the umbrella of the Coca-Cola Group. under the umbrella of the Coca-Cola Group from Bad Neuenahr.
