‘Bunte Kuh’ viewpoint
At the place where the wild waters of the Ahr rush below, a strikingly shaped rocky outcrop known as the "Bunte Kuh" (Colourful Cow) towers above the steep slate cliffs. Since the 19th century, when the rock was created by blasting, the "Bunte Kuh" has been one of the landmarks of the Ahr Valley.
The vantage point with its roofed tower offers breathtaking views of the Ahr Valley, the steep vineyards and the surrounding forests. A shelter and barbecue area invite you to take a break. The site is easily accessible via the Red Wine Hiking Trail and the Medical Spa Hiking Trail No. 3 (signposted in red). A hikers' car park is also available nearby.
By the way, there is also a legend surrounding the "Bunte Kuh" rocky outcrop: an impoverished knight who lived off raids camped at the top of the rock with his companions. Because he was brought up as a Christian, he always knelt down to pray as soon as he heard a church bell. One day, traders passed by down in the valley. When a bell rang, the robbers knelt down and the merchants moved on unmolested. But then the robbers realised where the bell was coming from. Suddenly, a colourful spotted cow with a bell around its neck emerged from the bushes. Enraged, the knight grabbed the animal by the horns and pushed it down the precipice. Since then, the rock has been called the "Colourful Cow".
