Das Langfigtal

A valley that has changed – and whose story continues

The Langfigtal is one of Altenahr’s most distinctive landscapes. Nestled between steep vineyards and wooded slopes, the idyllic path followed the course of the River Ahr. Even before the flood, the Langfigtal was a favourite destination for walkers and hikers, who could experience peace and quiet, nature and the unique landscape of the Ahr Valley here.

Paths ran along the Ahr through a varied riverside landscape. Small bridges, seating areas and spots by the water invited visitors to linger. Trees and shrubs lined the banks of the Ahr, whilst the water followed its natural course through the valley. For many visitors and locals, the Langfigtal was a place where one could experience first-hand the special interplay of river, rocks, woodland and vineyards .

The floods of 14–15 July 2021

The devastating flood disaster fundamentally transformed the Langfigtal within a matter of hours. The River Ahr burst its banks and swept away paths, bridges, riverbank defences and numerous structures. Parts of the vegetation and the familiar landscape were also severely damaged.

What had grown and been shaped by people over decades was suddenly no longer there. At the same time, the flood powerfully demonstrated the force of a river reclaiming its natural habitat.

The Langfigtal today

Anyone walking through the Langfigtal today encounters a landscape in transition. In many places, the traces of the flood are still visible, whilst at the same time new life has emerged. Nature is developing increasingly independently on the areas that have been freed up. Young plants are growing, riverbanks are changing and the River Ahr is, in some places, reshaping its surroundings naturally once again.

At the same time, reconstruction is progressing step by step. Paths, crossings and tourist infrastructure are being redesigned and rebuilt in line with today’s requirements. The aim is not simply to restore the Langfigtal to its pre-2021 state. Rather, the aim is to create a sustainable area that combines nature, flood protection, safety and recreation.

Looking ahead

Reconstruction is a long-term process. Not everything that used to be taken for granted can or should be recreated in exactly the same place. Some areas will change permanently. Others will gradually be reopened to visitors.

In this way, a new connection between memory and the future is emerging in the Langfigtal: the history of the old Langfigtal remains part of the place, whilst at the same time a new landscape is developing.
